In the summer of 1980, my brother Amer was called up for military service. In September of that year, the war with Iran began, and his brother was sent to the front where he was killed in November.
This severe loss was very hard on my parents, but with a substantial difference in feelings; my mother was grief-stricken, however, since my father, at that time was a senior member of the Bàath Party, he considered him son's death as a sacrifice for the homeland, representing a dignified martyr.
Saddam when he began hostilities was thinking of a blitzkrieg with limited loss of life. Therefore, to gratify the families of the martyred soldiers, the dictator received them where he offered cash goods, land and cars.
In this picture, there are my brother M. and my father sitting with Saddam. The picture was taken by the official photographer of the presidential palace on March 26,1983.
